Now, I Get It

I didn't get it at first.

I've heard their music and liked it, but I didn't get the fascination with them.

I bought their album and liked it, but I still didn't really get it.

Musicians, music fans, and hipsters-assholes all love them..........but, I didn't really understand why.

Then, I saw them live.

Holy fucking shit. Now, I get it.

I finally understand why everyone makes such a big deal about Old Crow Medicine Show. First off, I wanted tickets because I am completely in love with the band that was going to be opening for them, Shovels & Rope. They are amazing. If you haven't heard of them, look them up and buy their new album.

And, after hearing Old Crow Medicine Show's new album I figured "hey, I like bluegrass......this will be fun."

I didn't realize that each member of the band is an absolutely outstanding musician. I didn't realize how they could command a stage and a crowd.

Honestly, I thought it was all hype. Well, it's not. If you like anything relating to the old country sound, you have to see Old Crow Medicine Show live.

You Have to Buy This Album. Seriously, Go Buy It.

Jack White's Lazaretto is fan-fucking-tastic. Seriously, it is amazing.

I know that I'm a big fan-boy when it comes to Jack White, but this album is ridiculously amazing. I can not stop listening to it.

It's rock. It's country. It's crunchy. It's polished.

No one in their right mind can tell me that High Ball Stepper is anything but incredible.

Buy a turntable and get the vinyl version. Jack White is such a vinyl geek and he went all out with this album.

In honor of the CMT Awards, CMA Music Fest, and Rolling Stone's Top 100 Country Songs

Rolling Stone posted a list of the Top 100 Country Songs. There are so many things wrong with this list. Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and Brad Paisley all made the list. Seriously, Rolling Stone? Taylor Fucking Swift?? From anyone who has ever enjoyed great country music, fuck you.

The CMT Awards were this week along with the CMA Music Fest in Nashville. When it was the International Country Music Fan Fair, it was pretty awesome. Now it is just a big, showy, nothing-experience of shit music.

In honor of all of this, Hank III:

Seether/Black Stone Cherry in Chattanooga

Last week I went to see a couple of my favorite bands, Seether and Black Stone Cherry, at a great little venue in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Track 29 is an old skating rink behind the Chattanooga Choo Choo; it is a tiny little venue and a great place to see a show. I saw Jack White's first solo show there, so I was excited to go back and see Seether and Black Stone Cherry.

Track 29 doesn't hold a lot of people, so you're going to be close to the stage wherever you are inside the building. And, it is a very, very loud venue. It's fucking great.

The crowd was pretty much packed-in near the stage by the time that Black Stone Cherry came on. If you don't know Black Stone Cherry, you need to educate yourself. They are pure southern rock. If they were around in 1974 they'd be on tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd and Marshall Tucker.

They bring tons of energy, but the crowd was kind of dead. It was strange. When they went into Blind Man, the crowd didn't really respond.

Honestly, I blame the local rock station for not talking up the show enough. I hoped that it would be better when Seether took the stage; it wasn't.

Seether hit the stage with one of my favorites, Gasoline.

The crowds reaction: meh. It was fucking strange.

Again, I blame the local rock station. You've got two fantastic rock bands playing in a tiny little venue and there was no presence from the local rock station to be seen and you could tell that the vast majority of the people inside were not excited to be there. If I was on the air in Chattanooga I would have been talking about how this would be one of the best rock shows to come to town. The reaction from the crowd was kind of pathetic. Maybe that is the reason that both bands played short sets........

Black Stone Cherry's Setlist:
Maybe Someday
Me And Mary Jane
Yeah Man
In My Blood
Blind Man
Fiesta del Fuego
White Trash Millionaire
Blame It on the Boom Boom
Lonely Train

Seether's Setlist:
Gasoline
Fine Again
Driven Under
Broken
Drum Solo
Words As Weapons
Rise Above This
Tonight
Country Song
The Gift
Fake It
Remedy

I don't blame the venue. I don't blame the bands. I blame the crowd for being less than excited and I blame the local rock station for not giving them a reason to be excited.

I'll leave you with one of my favorites that didn't get played.

Other stuff from Pharrell

That damn Happy song by Pharrell Williams is everywhere. Every damn where. Oh. My. God.........

That song is pretty much If You're Happy and You Know It, Clap Your Hands.

And that stupid hat.

Seriously, there are plenty of reasons to hate this guy.

However, let me give you a reason to not hate him. You have to admit that Pharrell Williams is talented. So, the next time you hear Happy and feel like cussing think about another project from him: N*E*R*D

I can't stand that damn Happy song. But, I like N*E*R*D.

I learned something today......

Today is Slim Jim Phantom's birthday. I recognize him as the drummer in Stray Cats. However, what I didn't know about Slim Jim Phantom is that he is a member of a band called The Head Cat. They are a rockabilly band featuring Lemmy from Motörhead. Fucking Lemmy singing rockabilly!!!!! WHAT?!?!?!?!?!? How the hell have I never heard of this? Where have I been? How does this happen??????????

I'm glad I discovered this.

Happy birthday to Taylor Hanson........wait, what????

Look, before you pass judgement on why I would want to wish a happy birthday to the lead singer of Hanson, just give me a minute. First, you have to get over the fact that they recorded MMMbop. Even though that shit is crazy catchy and was a huge hit........ I know that I'm probably the last person that you'd think would come to the defense of Hanson, but you need to realize that Taylor Hanson (and his brothers) are incredibly talented guys. They play their own instruments, write their own music, have legions of fans, have released 9 studio albums, started their own record label.......hell, they even created their own beer. I've got three examples for you. Give them a chance. First, imagine being 17 years old and 3 years removed from being a multi-platinum one-hit wonder, and you turn out this. Second, legitimately one of my favorite songs of all time comes from their 6th (SIXTH! 1,2,3,4,5,freaking 6!) album. It is called Penny & Me. One more example of Taylor Hanson's talent. The band Tinted Windows. James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins and A Perfect Circle, Bun E. Carlos from Cheap Trick, Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne, and Taylor motherfucking Hanson. So, yes, I stand by my opinion that Taylor Hanson is talented. Happy birthday.
